1. “pray for a safe return from all our mortal enemies, seeing you’re dead set on going down to the ships —though you go against my will.”
priam’s phone rings. cuba looks up from where she is studying for her Civil Procedures final and says, “babe. come on. don’t.”
“it’s hector,” priam says.
“i know. that’s why i said ‘don’t,’” cuba tells him dryly. “you’re not his dad. let him figure it out.”
priam shakes his head. cuba doesn’t get it: she was in a sorority but she was far more loyal to the crew girls, and even then, girls were ... well, girls never broke bones trying to jump off the roof because they thought they were “built different.” girls never caught whole-house food poisoning because they thought eggs couldn’t expire. girls never called priam asking for, or if they even had, social security numbers because they thought it was related to retirement. she doesn’t know what it was like.
